The Classroom app helps target learning for all students.

Teacher Stories

The Classroom app frees up time to personalise student learning.

During his unit on science fiction, teacher Jarrod Martin challenged his Year 8 English students to use their most descriptive writing skills to describe a robot. Students were then asked to swap descriptions and draw their partner’s robot. Jarrod quickly discovered that differentiating the lesson to accommodate all ability levels — and keeping all students on task — meant he had limited time to work individually with students.

Last year, Jarrod started using the Classroom app on iPad to manage student devices, share work, and guide students through their lessons more efficiently. Now he’s able to easily group students with similar abilities for activities like the robot project. Jarrod assigns each group a learning task that’s designed for their level, then uses Classroom and AirDrop to send resources to each member of the group simultaneously, dramatically reducing the time he spends on lesson setup.

With Classroom, I can differentiate in real time. I don’t need to conduct three different instructional presentations. Instead I can do three different lessons all at once.

When Jarrod sees outstanding descriptive writing during an activity, he also uses Classroom, along with AirPlay, to project student work on an Apple TV–enabled display to inspire other learners.

Jarrod relies on the Screen View feature in Classroom to get a glimpse of student work as he moves around the room, checking in without disrupting their writing flow. And students no longer need to wait for feedback from Jarrod. Instead, they leave questions and comments for him on their work as they’re creating it, knowing that he’ll be checking in and responding to their comments. With Classroom, Jarrod knows at a glance if his students are on task, freeing him up to spend more time providing constructive feedback.

Classroom allows me more time to provide my students with the purposeful feedback necessary for them to improve upon their learning.

At the end of a lesson, Jarrod views a summary of student activity on the Classroom timeline screen to reflect on how the class went. He then uses this information to plan for the next class with these students.

Classroom is all about augmenting the learning experience. It has changed the way I teach by enabling me to more easily differentiate student learning and streamline my ability to give student feedback.
