Help your students draw the world they want to see.

Changing the world starts with seeing it differently. This Everyone Can Create activity was designed with artist and storyteller, Oliver Jeffers, to encourage students to look at the environment around them and consider how they can make it better. They’ll build new skills in photography and drawing to express their ideas, and share those ideas with others.

Use the world as a backdrop for another scene or change your students want to see happen — in any subject you’re teaching. Try one of the ideas below, or create your own.

  • Social Studies

What mark will your students leave on the world? Whether you’re teaching civics or covering a historical event, go further by asking them to draw over a photo of themselves to show what they’ll do to make the world a better place.

  • Science

How can students improve their own environment? If you’re teaching natural habitats, life cycles, or climates, have your students take a photo of unused space in your community. Then encourage them to draw their ideas of how the space could be used differently.

  • Language Arts

What would nature say if it had a voice? For creative writing or character exploration, have students bring living or non-living objects to life in a photo by adding human-like features and captions.

The world becomes a better place because people imagine it that way.
