Amanda used activities from the Everyone Can Create Music project guide to empower her students to express the thoughts, ideals, and perspectives of historical leaders by creating well-produced podcasts.
Amanda’s students started by learning about various courageous civil rights leaders. Each student chose a leader they connected with and researched their story of resilience. Then they were assigned activities that taught them to make, record, and layer sounds in GarageBand to help build their understanding of how to create a podcast for their final project. Working in pairs, students became scriptwriters and voice actors as they thought through how to represent the leaders they chose.

Then students shifted gears to become audio producers as they layered the tracks using Audio Recorder and instrumental loops in GarageBand. Finally, each pair recorded and shared their podcast with their classmates.
Involving my students in the creative process brought the stories of the civil rights leaders to life. Not only was this podcast project one of their favorites, but they also learned valuable lessons of civil rights leaders that will stick with them in the years to come.
