Inspired by Peter H. Reynolds’s book, The Dot, Marc Faulder encourages his young learners to use drawings, photos, and voice recordings to share their ideas about how they can create positive change in the world.
After reading The Dot out loud and discussing it with his students, Marc guides them through a series of activities using built-in tools for iPad to explore and express who they are and how they hope to create change in their communities.
In a template that Marc created in Pages, students start by using drawing tools for iPad to create unique illustrations that represent them. Then they personalize their pages with selfie photos.
Students then add voice recordings that explain how they will make their mark with positive contributions in the world. These can be local ideas such as planting flowers for wildlife, or future goals like becoming a nurse.
Finally, Marc gathers each student’s page into a collaborative book that represents the whole class.
The possibility of book creation with young children has always been endless, and this activity further enhances this experience.
