Facts can be easily forgotten, but stories can help students retain them. Discover how Shuhannah’s students created a narrative about what they learned about plant cells to help them better recall the respective functions of each cell component.
After learning how plant cells work, Shuhannah’s students wrote a story in Keynote that integrated the role of each cell component.
Next, they created an illustration of a plant cell using the pre-set shapes in Keynote. Learn how to use shapes to make illustrations in Chapter 9 of the Everyone Can Create Drawing guide.
Then they animated the plant cell to correspond to different parts of their story. Learn how to animate illustrations in Keynote in Chapter 9 of the Everyone Can Create Drawing guide.
Next, they exported these as animated GIFs. Learn how to create animated GIFs in Chapter 9 of the Everyone Can Create Drawing guide.
Once they were ready to create their book, they selected a book template in Pages. Learn how to use book templates in Pages in Chapter 10 of the Everyone Can Create Drawing guide.
Students began laying out their story in Pages, incorporating the animated GIFs they’d just created. Learn how to add images to books in Pages in Chapter 10 of the Everyone Can Create Drawing guide.
With all the text and visual elements laid out the book, students added a recording of their reading.
Students then exported it as an EPUB book. Learn how to publish books in Chapter 10 of the Everyone Can Create Drawing guide.
Next, they exchanged stories with their classmates and created a library of interesting narratives that expanded their learning on how plant cells work.
Getting the students to create narratives doesn’t only help them to better grasp a concept, it also allows them to explore other talents. Such a multi‑tasking learning experience is of immense value to the student’s overall development.
