Jose O’Donovan Apple Distinguished Educator Primary School, Literacy
Poems can sing, if only we know how to listen. Learn how Jose taught his students to appreciate the rich tapestry of emotions in poetry and articulate their understanding through music, turning literature into a lesson beyond the written word.
Jose first asked students to analyze “The Highway Man” on Freeform, noting the different emotions different characters would experience.

Then students used GarageBand to create music that reflected the rise and fall of the poem’s emotions. Learn how to create live loops in Chapter 4 of the Everyone Can Create Music guide.
Finally, he asked them to add their narration to the music. Learn more about post‑production mixing in Chapter 5 of the Everyone Can Create Music guide.
GarageBand is a gift for students who don’t play a musical instrument, making it possible for everyone in my class to express their emotions, exercise their artistic muscle, and to, ultimately, drive literary appreciation.
