Holiday Loops with GarageBand
From school concerts to caroling, the winter/holiday season is always full of music. As a kid, I loved the music from the Nutcracker (especially the Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy) but it just didn't sound as cool on my out-of-tune piano as it does on the Celesta. ➡️ Cue GarageBand! Knowing how much my students love creating music with Live Loops, I decided to design my own Live Loops grid, based on the Tchaikovsky classic. This activity was featured in 12 Days of Creativity: Volume 2 (which is available for download on Apple Books.) To get started simply download and unzip the GarageBand file and 💥 you can start creating your very own remix. (Check out the video below if you need help downloading). Explore the loops and build your song by: When you find a mix you like, simply tap the Record button and play through your arrangement. You can then export your creation as a song or make a screen record and share with the world! I know my students always enjoyed this activity and hopefully yours will too. 🎵🎛❤️

Holiday Scavenger Hunt Keynote
This is an activity that was originally created for a staff scavenger hunt that showed the different capabilities of Keynote. It highlights that Keynote can be used for more than a presentation tool but a tool that can be customized for a myriad of purposes in education. This activity is a holiday themed scavenger hunt where there are 10 tasks, that in this example, teachers were tasked to complete in their faculty teams. The challenges were created and then uploaded to ChatGPT to rewrite the challenges in more festive wording. The challenges were written on presents and then combining screenshots and using them as place holders, allowed them to insert their media into the project. Extending this idea beyond a holiday activity, scavenger hunts could be used across many contents to engage students in domain specific thinking. For example, having students take images of different geometric shapes, nature walks in science or documenting a process, taking images of different locations for geography or history. . . there are endless ways this could be used in combination with other Apple apps or features to enhance instruction.

Unwind on your Holiday Break by drawing your Peanuts Character in Keynote
As we all start to finish work for the year, it can still be a time filled with busyness and rushing round buying presents, tidying the house or even just going from event to event seeing everyone. Having some time to relax and unwind is great way to shift gears from work mode to holiday mode and this can be different for everyone. I have always found drawing to be a great hobby of mine and drawing on my iPad is even better because I can erase my mistakes! Try out this activity to help you take some time for you over the holiday period, put on your favourite Christmas Movie, grab a hot chocolate and a fruit mince pie and draw away. Download the Draw your Peanuts Character Asset Keynote here. (please duplicate and then make any changes to your own copy. 😃) Download the Draw yourself as a Peanuts Character PDF here. Watch the original Today at Apple Draw yourself as a Peanuts Character here.

Colors & Shapes of Nature - Holiday Joy with Photos, Line Draw, Shapes
Here is a fun out doors activity I tried that works nicely as we approach the December holidays. I’ve exported the “pieces” from Keynote to Animated gifs so you can see my efforts and imported the Keynote into Clips for a full share at the end. Would love to see you try it and share your Nature Holiday results in the comments. Take a photograph with fall or winter foliage, visualizing a holiday shape or colors. Add the photo from your Photo Library a to Keynote slide. Identify a shape in the photo or choose a holiday symbol matches a color in the photo in the Keynote Shapes Library. Position the Shape on the photo in the slide. Tap the shape, tap Animate. Tap Line Draw to outline the shape Use Animate/Add Action to add any additional effects to the shape. Add any Text as needed to the image. Tap the added Shape, use Style/Border/Style to decorate your holiday shape with Nature. With all your Nature Holiday images in Keynote, export as a movie, add to Clips for a class showcase of Holiday in Nature. Attached is the Keynote, feel free to change and substitute with your own holiday images and shapes. Share photos or Animated gifs below!

Sacred Skulls, Dia de los Muertos
Let's share this beloved Mexican holiday with our students by decorating sugar skulls! Many people of Mexican heritage make these sugar skulls to remember and honor their loved ones who have passed away. Students can use the Keynote template to design a sugar skull that utilizes symmetry. Then students can record audio explaining whose life their sugar skull design honors. “This joyful holiday—which celebrates life more than death—dates back to pre-Hispanic Mexico.” - Edutopia #GPISD

Lunar New Year Lanterns in Keynote - 2024 Update!
I like to encourage learners to do some digital crafting and primary source sleuthing around Lunar New Year (or any holiday). Using a Library of Congress primary source from the Carol Highsmith Collection, importing into Keynote and adding animation is a fun celebration for the 2023 Lunar New Year Lantern Festival. After adding the photograph to Keynote, masking with a circle Shape isolates a lantern and then Animate/Build out/Scale Big moves it out of the photograph. The “hopping” rabbit is a Keynote Shape, animated with Build in/Bouncy. The finished Keynote can be exported as an Animated Gif or Movie and shared in a digital festival. And here is an update for Year of the Dragon - 2024 Learners can vary this activity by taking their own photos of lanterns in their communities, creating a lantern with shapes in Keynote and/or creating a paper lantern, photographing it and then animating it in Keynote. This activity can also inspire a deeper dive into the history of cultural holidays. Challenge learners to: Brainstorm questions about the holiday (try Freeform) Categorize questions and form collaboration teams for research and further questions as information grows (try Numbers) Investigate by interviewing classmates, family members or community members who participate in the holiday’s traditions (try Clips, iMovie or GarageBand) Share learning with classmates in a variety of ways, (visual media, podcast, video, slides, gallery walks) I find that incorporating the inclusion of all holidays celebrated by learners fosters understanding, engagement, learning and joy. Hispanic Heritage Month- Create a Luminaria
Let's celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with our students by creating luminaries! Students can use this Keynote template to create a design using the golden circles, or use the drawing tool to poke holes. Students can then group the designs and animate them to make them appear as if they are glowing. Page 3 includes a media placeholder so that students can record a video explaining what their design represents. “Luminaries are traditional decor used in the Hispanic culture. They are typically paper bags that have designs or holes poked through the side, and are lit by putting a candle inside. Commemorating Juneteenth using CBL & Apple Tools
Background The newest U.S. National Holiday, Juneteenth, is another wonderful opportunity for student celebration and learning (great for summer programs). Juneteenth is a holiday that commemorates the announcement of the end of slavery in Texas and encourages reflection and progress on race relations and equity. A possible Challenge Based Learning (CBL) Scenario Using Juneteenth as a Big Idea or topic in a Challenge Based Learning activity provides learners with the opportunity to involve and inform their communities about the commemoration. I’m outlining some simple steps to suggest to teachers as starters for a CBL based activity. Create an engaging entry point to the activity using Keynote, Clips or iMovie to introduce the Big Idea. Consider telling the story of the announcement of the Emancipation Proclamation in Texas. Challenge leaner teams to brainstorm questions about the event and select questions to research. Post research and additional questions on a collaborative Freeform. Student teams share relevant primary source documents and historical information. Teams create and refine an essential question such as, “How can we celebrate and inform our community about Juneteenth?” Brainstorm ideas around the essential question, teams continue to research and refine. Determine a project proposal and share idea in Keynote, Clips or iMovie presentations. Teams collect peer feedback and constructive suggestions for project improvement. Teams organize and act on selected solution. Examples of solutions might include a virtual panel discussion, an art exhibition, a poetry slam, or a community service project. Select tools to implement CBL activity. For example: Pages for community event flyers or informational brochures Keynote for presentations to engage the community Numbers to keep track of tasks, budgets, or RSVPs iMovie or Clips for promotional videos or documentaries about Juneteenth Garageband for podcasts or interviews Freeform for collaborative brainstorming Notes for collecting research information To assess, use reflective writing with peer feed back that evaluates content learning, project successes and challenges and team organization. Movie Export of Keynote created timeline with primary sources that inform Juneteenth I’ve also attached a Pages file that outlines other activities for Juneteenth Utilizing Digital Activities to Learn About & Celebrate Juneteenth. It incorporates listening and speaking practice, note taking, interviewing and community and civic engagement and involvement. (download below). Let me know what else you would add or what approach would help educators use this holiday as a learning opportunity. Let's Explore Some Different Cultures
Students will explore different cultures and examples of what makes up a culture. Using the Keynote Template, they will give background information to the country they are researching and then different cultural beliefs and practices in the country. Lastly, students will expand on their own thoughts about what they learned. They will share one of their favorite things they learned about and reflect on one question or wonder they still have. Compelling Question: How do our values, beliefs, and experiences shape who we are as individuals and influence our behavior? SS.6.13: Identify what makes up culture and examine how people acquire their cultural beliefs and value systems. Success Criteria: My project is organized and easy to understand (storyboard was followed) My images relate to my topic My information is important and relates to my topic I have explained each holiday, tradition, activity, food, etc. Example: Nicaragua Culture Example Video
