Setting Up Shared iPads with Jamf: Tips and Advice Needed

Anyone using shared iPads and Jamf? I am trying to set up a cart of shared iPads, but I really don't know where to begin. Any help pointing me in the right direction would be great. I already have the Managed Apple Ids already created, but don't know what to do from there.

I do see in Jamf Pro the enable Shared iPads, but don't know what to do from there.

Also if you have any tips/advice for using shared iPads I would love to hear what you have to say.

Hi Brian,

I use JAMF (not pro version) and I'm no expert but you will need to enrol your devices in JAMF, if you set up a profile you can use Automated Device Enrolment, under the Devices menu. I found it really handy getting a techy on site to help get started.

Hello Brian!

Thank you for your question. There are many considerations to take into account when deploying shared iPad. Here's two articles that are useful to review when getting started:

I wasn't certain if you were looking for JAMF specific tips. But It may be helpful to reach out to your Apple EDU Systems Engineer to discuss your deployment. You can find out who your Apple SE is by calling 1-800-800-2775 and choose option 4 to get connected with your school's Apple sales team.

Share iPad mode needs the following:

  • It needs to be enabled in the pre-stage enrollment profile in Jamf Pro. When you set up the iPad, it then boots it up in that mode.
  • Once set up, it is possible to then simply sign into the device using a Managed Apple Account.
  • However, to make it easier for students to log in, it’s possible to assign the iPad to a class (synced from Apple School Manager) so kids can just select their name from a list. See https://trainingcatalog.jamf.com/shared-ipad-for-jamf-pro
