I am trying to set up lab stations for students to collaborate in table groups using 1 imac and 4 ipad Air (gen5) in a collaborative setting.
I have 40 Ipads that I am trying to use with 10 lab stations.

Have you considered a shared iPad deployment. It makes lab situations a lot easier.
Each iPad can be logged into by up to 10 students and it means work is saved to a student profile (iCloud) so it makes collaboration and continuation of work between sessions a whole lot easier.
