Apple Classroom and the New IOS- App lock not working

We are experiencing issues with the new windows option for multitasking. When using apple classroom and locking into an app, it will not lock additional windows on the screen. It has become an issue since the the locked app will open, but any other window on the screen at the time is still accessible.

Any ideas for how to make the app lock work again?

I’m having a similar issue, and we haven’t been able to figure it out either. Maybe you could try moving this post to the Deployment and Management message board on the forum? They might be more knowledgeable about the topic.

Fixes and Workarounds

1. Disable Multitasking Features

To restore old “true lock” behavior, disable multitasking options on student iPads:

  • Go to Settings → Home Screen & Multitasking → Multitasking

Turn off:

  • Allow Multiple Apps
  • Picture in Picture
  • Stage Manager (if enabled)

Then test locking an app again via Apple Classroom — this usually restores the expected “full lock” behavior.

2. Restart the iPads

After changing those settings, restart the devices to clear any cached multitasking layouts. Sometimes, lingering windows keep reappearing until a reboot.

3. Update iPadOS and Apple Classroom

Make sure:

  • iPadOS is updated to the latest version (17.7 or later)
  • Apple Classroom and Apple School Manager are both fully updated. Apple sometimes pushes silent fixes for MDM / Classroom lock behavior.

4. Reapply Supervision / MDM Settings

If you’re managing devices with an MDM:

  • Ensure “Allow Multitasking” is disabled in the MDM profile
  • Ensure “Lock in App” is not restricted by conflicting policies. (Sometimes, MDMs like Jamf or Mosyle have settings that override Apple Classroom commands.)

5. If Still Broken: Test with Single-App Mode via MDM

If you urgently need reliable app locking, consider pushing Single App Mode directly from your MDM instead of relying on Apple Classroom. It’s a deeper lock and overrides all multitasking.
