From Donalyn Miller’s The Book Whisperer to Penny Kittle’s Book Love, research continues to support the benefits of empowering students to make their own choices when it comes to what books they read in order to learn and apply new thinking and reading skills. Over the last several years, many English teachers have transitioned from centering their curriculum around traditional teacher-selected texts to supporting choice-based reading in their classrooms.
With the progression to this format, teachers are constantly looking for ways to engage and assess their students’ understanding and analysis of texts when not everyone has read the same thing. Cue the English Class Digital Choice Board.
When I rolled this out to my middle school students, I was eager to see what they would create, but nothing prepared me for how amazing their products would be and how much work they would put into publishing them.
I’ve included the image that I would post in our learning management system, but I’ve also attached the Keynote file as a resource in the event that you want to manipulate the choice board to add, remove, or edit the choices.
