Clips Morphological Dictionary

Kia ora koutou, e hoa mā,

Currently our senior school students (Year 5-8) are learning about natural disasters through their Conceptual Curriculum Inquiry. A main focus is the recent Cyclone Gabrielle in Aotearoa.

Our senior students have just begun to be taught with a Structured Literacy approach for writing. Some lack knowledge for spelling, morphology and the ability to create the four main simple sentences.

To combat this lack of knowledge I decided to design 'base' Clips Morphology Dictionaries that our ākonga can use as a platform to springboard their understanding. These can be used by teachers to begin the process of explicit teaching around morphology, vocabulary and simple sentence structure linked to their inquiry. Students can then collaborate with their peers and kaiako to add their own personalised content to the Clips Morphology Dictionaries utilising other apps like slides or devices such as apple pencils. The Clips can then be stored in Notes as a widget on their iPad so that their learning is right there on their home screens, ready for revision.

The Clips Morphological Dictionary would be effective for any students, but especially for neurodiverse and ESOL students. I really like the idea of co creating for learning consumption and growth with Apple products. I love how Clips can level the playing field for those students who need extra support. By allowing as many repetitions as necessary and having a multi sensory approach their learning will start to stick.

Ngā Mihi,

Bex Street

Your Clips dictionary is a great idea! The images and icons explain the words so well. This would work well for all students. I could also see students creating their own Clips dictionary for practice and skill building. Thanks for the video demo and idea!
