Keynote for Med Ed Unfolding Case Studies

We are using Keynote’s “link” feature to design learning experiences for our nursing students. The link feature allows us to create buttons that link to slides other than simply the next slide. We create case studies that ask questions along the way. Students click the button/link based on their response and are directed to the slide based on their decision. Rather than getting all the information in one paragraph, they receive info along the way, the case unfolds based on the choices they make. Some of those choices may even lead to the morgue.

The keynote files can be saved as PDF files that can not be edited and can be “played” on any device. The links remain active in the PDF versions as well. This strategy is like app development without all the overhead. Many of our faculty members have chosen not to add a back button, thus forcing the students to move forward with their original choices.

This unfolding environment is engaging and one of our students’ favorite active learning activities.

Very creative use of following a story or making a decision on a procedure using Keynote link to slide! This is a wonderful idea with applications across many subject areas. Thanks for sharing!
