Using IPad to see and hear thinking for Algebra I

I used to think that students are not connecting learning due to ease of apps that give immediate answers. Now I think that we are able to use apps to tap into process rather than answers.

I am an intervention specialist (special education teacher) at John Marshall School of Information Technology High School in Cleveland, OH.

I was surprised to see our students were immediately engaged with the process of studying a problem but instead of writing the answers, students we asked to record using the imbedded recording icon on our learning management system.

We will not need to do anything differently. We will continue to ask questions surrounding process and not final answers so thinking is still an option for student comprehension of content.

I love that LMSs are adding more and more audio and video submission features. These open the possibilities for sure. With iPad you can also have them do a screen record with voice over and watch them work through the problem with Freeform, Notes or maybe Numbers. Great possibilities.
