What is Cultural Capital?

The establishment of a new inspection framework from Ofsted in 2019 in the UK, provided some major changes to how schools are inspected and how their quality is assured. They included an expectation that ‘cultural capital’ be inspected. For Ofsted, the definition of cultural capital is:

“the essential knowledge that pupils need to be educated citizens, introducing them to the best that has been thought and said and helping to engender an appreciation of human creativity and achievement”.

What does this mean for us as practitioners?

The extent to which classroom teachers, middle or senior leaders are familiar with this idea, in the form it has entered education, would depend on how many had either studied or become in other ways acquainted with the mixture of ideas in this definition, in either first degree, initial teacher or other training.

How can I use iPad to enhance Cultural Capital experiences in the classroom?

This session will address the nuance of ‘cultural capital’ and how we can use iPad to provide cultural capital-enriching experiences to enhance the learning environment in our classrooms. The session provide a model to support us with this and will consider some hands-on ideas and examples.
