Creating Visual Vocabulary for Early Childhood students—EXPLORE
As my examples for the Explore section of my portfolio, I chose the topic of creating Visual Vocabulary for my students who are still in the early stages of linguistic development. The first lesson dealt with them drawing pictures that illustrated music vocabulary (a thunderstorm for ‘forte = loud” and a nice sunny day scene for “piano = soft” to contrast) using SketchesSchool. This was made into a video clip with voiceover, using iMovie. The second lesson was a bit more complex, using Keynote and iMovie to create visual motion to describe “crescendo” and “decrescendo”. I performed this on a trumpet for my example, but it could be the students’ own voices or using any of the many classroom instruments we have available for use. These are teacher versions, obviously, but I hope you can enjoy them with your students’ creative contributions, too!
