Providing clarity of learning intentions through Clips

As educators we are faced with the challenge of designing learning experiences that engage our students in creative expression, while ensuring curriculum requirements are met. I am a big fan of digital scaffolds, the apps Keynote and Numbers being two of my favourite tools for this. More recently, I have discovered how ‘Clips’ provides clarity of learning intentions so students can record, synthesise and share learning in deep and personal ways.

Clips is a movie making app with a simple user interface that enables teachers and students to create video content quickly and easily. By providing a Clips project template with the learning intentions built-in at the beginning, followed by posters as instructional placeholders, students have clarity around the required knowledge and skills they need to demonstrate.

Features of this type of Clips project:

  • Reduce cognitive load for students ensuring they can focus on aspects of a task in manageable chunks
  • Provide multiple opportunities for students to watch and listen to the teacher explaining the requirements of the task
  • Enable students to creatively express what they know and can do through a combination of annotations, video, music, photos, live titles and more
  • Differentiate for the diverse needs of all our students.
