As educators we are faced with the challenge of designing learning experiences that engage our students in creative expression, while ensuring curriculum requirements are met. I am a big fan of digital scaffolds, the apps Keynote and Numbers being two of my favourite tools for this. More recently, I have discovered how ‘Clips’ provides clarity of learning intentions so students can record, synthesise and share learning in deep and personal ways.
Clips is a movie making app with a simple user interface that enables teachers and students to create video content quickly and easily. By providing a Clips project template with the learning intentions built-in at the beginning, followed by posters as instructional placeholders, students have clarity around the required knowledge and skills they need to demonstrate.
Features of this type of Clips project:
- Reduce cognitive load for students ensuring they can focus on aspects of a task in manageable chunks
- Provide multiple opportunities for students to watch and listen to the teacher explaining the requirements of the task
- Enable students to creatively express what they know and can do through a combination of annotations, video, music, photos, live titles and more
- Differentiate for the diverse needs of all our students.
