New Apple Book: Composing With Found Sounds In GarageBand

I am so excited to share my new Book, "Composing With Found Sounds In GarageBand," released today. You can download it for free at the link below. It is great to be a contributing member of the AppleEDU community and to musicians and educators around the world.

This book was written as a Unit Lesson for my Everyone Can Create Music with iPad Course at The University of Virginia’s College at Wise. Although the students in the course have completed all projects included in the Everyone Can Create Music with iPad text before starting this unit, this book should include all the details necessary for this project to exist on its own with very little prior knowledge of the content or skills.

I would be honored for you to check it out and share any feedback!

Donald - this is so cool. I love the idea of using voice memos to collect found sounds and creating a composition. I did download your book. So impressive. I’ll give it a try!

Thank you for taking a moment to download the resource! I hope it is of value to you in your work (and play). The process using Voice Memos is a bit more lengthy than the short cut found later in the book but allows the composer to collect those original audio files to be referenced later outside of GarageBand or for use in a future project. I feel it’s worth the time investment and extra screen taps.

Please let me know if you have any questions or if I can help support you with GarageBand.

This looks like a great resource. I've played around with sampling sounds in GarageBand a bit with limited success, so I think this will be helpful! Excited to check it out!

Congrats 🎉 on the release of your new book! It's always great to see such innovative contributions to the Apple Education Community and the wider world of music and education.

The Sampler in GarageBand is such a powerful tool and one of my personal favorites. The ability to turn any sound or recording into a musical instrument is such a valuable tool for any musician. ❤️ how this book scaffolds the experience for the user, making it accessible to anyone brand new to GarageBand.

Thanks for the share, Donald.

I look forward to hearing how others engage with the material and bring into their learning environments.

After presenting a workshop on this topic with our faculty and upon their recommendation, I am excited to be able to share this resource and lesson in a mini-workshop format with our Upward Bound students on our campus next week. Our college has been generous to provide 35 iPads for these young high school students to use for this activity. I can’t wait to hear what they come up with!
