ADA Compliance for a ramp

I developed this resource for a Trigonometry course.

Materials list: iPad, Measure app, a public wheelchair ramp

The students use the measure app to measure the dimensions of a public ramp to determine if the ramp is in compliance with the ADA guidelines.

The first slide gives a ramp that I measured and we work that one out to be sure that everyone understands the concepts. Then, they have to do the same thing for a ramp of their choice.

When doing the math on the sample ramp, the ramp appears to be a little bit out of compliance. However, that facilitates a good discussion about how carefully we need to measure. What is an acceptable amount of error?

This is a quick application of right angle trigonometry.
