Code Tom the Turkey to Macy's

Students have been discussing the story “Balloons over Broadway” and learning information about the Macy’s Day Parade they are also learning the basics of coding. Thus coding Tom the Turkey to Macy’s was born.

Students are given a template with directional arrows to insert into the grid to code Tom to Macy’s. On the first slide the road blocks are already placed on the grid for the students to navigate and on the second slide the students add in the road blocks where they would choose allowing them to determine the difficulty of their path. To add to the project I allowed the students to animate Tom after they have coded the path using “create path” to have the visual of Tom following the path they created.

This is a cool resource that connects current events to the classroom...And just in time for CS Education Week! I want to share this with our elementary and middle schools!

This is great, JKeller! 🤩 Such a good way to bring some coding concepts into the classroom in a simple and visual way, embed digital skills, and it links to so many different subject areas! Great work! 👏
