Practice makes perfect, but some skills, like engaging in courageous conversations, can be challenging to rehearse.
This past week, I attended the Canadian ADE Academy and participated in a workshop by Emily MacLean and Shantel Clark on 'Courageous Conversations'.
We examined different frameworks that support these conversations and then practiced different scenarios with a partner.
Utilizing a Framework
A framework provides a structured approach to guide your conversation. Here’s an example of a framework you might use:
Practicing with AI
Practicing your conversation with a friend or a colleague can be beneficial. However, due to confidentiality and time constraints, it might be challenging to find the right person. This is where AI comes in handy! My tool of choice is ChatGPT’s voice feature.
When using AI, it is crucial to be mindful of the prompts you provide, ensuring you omit personal information. You can even ask the AI to give you feedback after the conversation to help you refine your skills.
By combining a structured framework with the capabilities of AI, you can effectively prepare for courageous conversations and enhance your communication skills.
Reflection
What challenges have you faced when trying to engage in courageous conversations, and how did you overcome them?
In what other ways have you utilized AI?
