Fun Facts All About Me Activity

Objective:

Teach Students how to create a Links Only Keynote Presentation for iPad.  Also known as Non-Linear Presentation. There is also a Demo Keynote file that you can download to check out for this activity.

  • Fun Activity to Start the School Year.
  • It can easily be modified for other subjects.
  • Rationale for Links Only vs Traditional Presentation.
  • It can be more engaging for the audience.
  • Presentations don’t have to start on slide 1.
  • Creating a hyperlinked presentation acts like a webpage.

  Activity: Fun Facts All About Me

  • Have them create a new Keynote and pick a Basic template with no images. Example: Basic White
  • Let’s make this slide a Links Only Presentation. Tap on the name Presentation in the top left. (ex Presentation)
  • Tap on Presentation Options
  • Tap on Presentation Type
  • Tap on Links Only and then tap on your Presentation Slide to exit.

 Table of Contents: Slide 1 

  • Double tap on the larger Text Box enter Table of Contents into the other text box and change the font size to 65 and the color to White using the Style Brush at the top right.  Position the text at the top of the slide. Now add 6 square shapes using the shapes icon at the top and give each of the boxes a title, and change the color. Tap on a square and use the Style icon to choose colors for each square.  Double tap on each square to enter a topic for the square using Family,  Favorite Foods,  Hobbies & Interest, Favorite Subject, Fun Facts and Favorite Animal     Position the slides neatly on the page.  (Tap and Drag)

Selfie:  Slide 2 

  • Add a new slide by clicking on the + at the bottom right of Keynote and use the style Photo-Vertical (has a Leopard on it).  Have them add a selfie of themselves in that placeholder by clicking on the plus in the photo. 
  • Give the slide a Title:  Fun Facts About Me ______ and add their name.   You can have them tap on the text for Fun Facts About Me and use the Style Brush to change the font and color.

Linking Slide 2 to Slide 1

  • Tap on the text for Fun Facts About Me, and the Format Box will appear.  Click on the > at the right and tap on Link.  Link Slide to 1.  Examples below.  Play your Keynote and test the link.

Rearranging slides: 

  • Tap on Slide 2 Fun Facts about me and drag to the top of the reorder the slides before adding more content.

Family: Slide 3

  • Add a new slide by clicking on the + at the bottom right of keynote and use the style Photo-Vertical (has a Leopard on it). Double tap on the text box in the new slide and enter Family and use the Style Brush to change the font and color.
  • Go back to the Table of Contents slide and tap on the box for Family and select Link and then select slide 3.
  • Now play the presentation and test the link.  
  • Give the slide a Title: Family. Use the Style Brush to change the font and color for the title.
  • Go the Family Slide and us Shapes at the top of the page and choose people.  Have the students add images for their family and they can add names to each image by double tapping on the shape. You can also tap on a image and resize by dragging on the corners.   They can also add a family photo later if they have one or they can delete the photo place holder. Advanced Feature:  If they add a photo you show them how to double tap on a photo and use Mask to zoom in and out of the photo. 

Favorite Foods: Slide 4

  • Add a new slide by clicking on the + at the bottom right of keynote and use the style Photo-3up (has a Leopard, Owl and Lizard). 
  • Go back to the Table of Contents slide and tap on the box for Favorite Foods and select Link and then select slide 4.
  • Now play the presentation and test the link.  
  • Give the slide a Title: Favorite Foods.   Use the Style Brush to change the font and color for the title.
  • Have them use Safari to locate at least three pictures of their favorite food.  Have them add the photos to the photos app  (link for adding photos)
  • Once they have added pictures in the photos app you can use the + in each photo place holder to add the images. 

Hobbies and Interests: Slide 5

  • Add a new slide by clicking on the + at the bottom right of keynote and use the style Title - Center
  • Go back to the Table of Contents slide and tap on the box for Hobbies and Interest and select Link and then select slide 5.  Now play the presentation and test the link.  
  • Give the slide a Title: Hobbies and Interests .   Use the Style Brush to change the font and color for the title.
  • Now have them use shapes to add 6 to 8 shapes that reflect their interests.  Have them how to change the color and size of the shapes.  Also have them arrange the shapes to make the slide look nice.

Naming Activity

  • Click on the Name Presentation in the Top Right of the Page.  Select Rename and have the students add their name ex.  Fun Facts by _________.

Sharing

  • Click on the Share icon in the top right (box with Arrow pointed up)  and choose an option such as email to share their work.

I love this activity that teaches non-linear navigation. It is such an import skill that will help with web development as well links within a document. Nicely done.
