Use the name themed activities included in this post to introduce early learners to STEAM disciplines, while practicing name recognition and formation, classroom routines, as well as fine motor and social skills.
In my new role as a STEAM Specialist, I will be primarily working with special education classes in early elementary grades. Trying to be mindful of their academic and social goals, as well as my need to quickly learn many student names, I decided to design my first lessons around their names.
Each activity serves as a way to introduce and begin exploring the disciplines in STEAM. The goals of the activities are to practice name recognition and formation, learn how to use and care for school supplies like glue, as well as exercise fine motor skills like pinching and cutting. These goals are helpful for many little learners entering school for the first time, and are on many of the Individual Education Plans for the students in my classes. These activities can be used as whole or small group learning experiences, and as stations. I plan to start with whole group learning so we can learn and practice classroom routines and procedures together. Then I’ll repeat the activities to provide additional learning opportunities by setting the activities up as stations for students to choose between.
The attached activity directions are ready for your students to use, with minimal prep involved. Additional information about materials, preparation, and procedures are all included in the presenter notes on each slide. There are even ways to level up the learning for each station and questions to inspire conversation around each area in STEAM.

I am so excited to dive into STEAM with my students this year. What STEAM themes are you planning in your classroom?

This is such a creative approach, Amanda! Designing steam lessons around students' names is a wonderful way to connect with them personally and support their learning goals. I love how you're integrating STEAM disciplines in a way that's meaningful and fun. Thanks for the helpful Keynote!
