Multimodality or multimodal media literacy at a glance!

In the course of my career, I've had the opportunity to become interested in the concept of multimodality or multimodal media literacy. To better grasp this concept, I created the following sketchnote with my favorite tools: iPad and Mac Book pro, as well as my favorite apps: Paper from Wetransfer BV and Photoshop.  In this respect, I exploit a back-and-forth approach between iPad and computer.

In this way, creating this sketchnote has enabled me to synthesize multimodality. You can see at a glance that it's about combining at least two semiotic modes to create a multimodal message from the following semiotic modes: image, text, movement and sound.

I love using sketchnotes to get my head around a complex concept. I then share it with colleagues and students to illustrate my point. And sometimes, I share it on social networks!

When it comes to multimodality, the iPad is obviously a powerful tool for exploiting it creatively. Image, text, movement, sound and even interactivity can be combined seamlessly and easily within the same device. I'll have a chance to share my ideas of how to exploit multimodality in fine art in a future post.

So true about iPad as a multimodal tool. Very easy to pull together a variety of media types to create a powerful and meaningful message. Thanks for Sketchnoting this concept. Very cool!
