Engaging high schoolers in a topic that might touch their experience today is a sure connection for learning history. The story of the integration of Little Rock Central High School in 1957 certainly meets that criteria. I’ve always found that my students were fascinated by this challenging and brave experience by students of their own age, situated on a high school campus that is not unlike high schools today. By using the Challenge Based Learning Framework, educators can enhance that connection.
There is a helpful set of Challenge Based Learning Keynote slides available to educators in the Apple Education Community Learning Center. Educators are free to download and alter the slides to meet their specific audience. I’ve attached my suggestions on using Challenge Based Learning to achieve this specific history topic in Keynote slides below.
With Challenge Based Learning students can direct their learning through brainstorming, question development, research and action. Getting learners involved in creating a Challenge empowers them and instills a sense of ownership.

Such an important topic to be teaching, and I love the way that the Keynote deck explains Challenge Based Learning through examples. I’ve always been that person that likes to see examples (that’s the problem I’m having with our new science book) I want to see it in action and the slide deck does that perfectly.
