Vocabulary anchor charts are important when teaching early learners, or English Language Learners, literacy skills such as reading and writing. Anchor charts assist and support students in: visualizing new words, provide context in understanding the meaning, encourage interaction when teachers and students work together to create the charts, and support independent learning. Once created, the charts become a reference tool that students can use on their own to review and reinforce vocabulary.
In my classroom the students and I enjoy creating vocabulary anchor charts based up a unit of study. When creating these shared writing charts student assistants me in writing the words, drawing matching pictures and creating movements to represent the meaning of words. Our charts are posted around my classroom and many times I run out of room. I created a digital version of our anchor charts for students to access at anytime on their iPads when completing our learning tasks.
To assist students even more in writing and reading skills I added sentence starters to the end of the Keynote anchor chart slide deck. Students may use these sentence starters to create their own sentences or listen to a sentence dictated by the teacher to write with their pencil and paper.
