High School Learning with Apple #11: Questioning with Pop-Art

Megan Trahan (@Dragon_Coach) and I met at ADE institute in 2023 and have been working on compiling lessons for high school teachers using MacBooks or iPads in class. I use iPads, and Megan uses MacBooks, and in our collaboration, we realized that small adjustments can be made to apply the lessons in each environment. Over the next 30 days, we’ll post one lesson idea each day!

Lesson Idea #11: Questioning with Pop-Art

A goal for our English Language Learners is that they understand how to use question words such as who, what, when, where, and why. Not only to ask questions but also to answer questions. In this activity, students practice both of these skills by using photos and markup.

Students started by using their iPad to snap a photo of themselves in a pose that goes along with the word they are illustrating. They then used Markup and Apple Pencil to create a pop-art style image. Their final creation had to include:

  • The questioning word they were using.
  • A question that used the word correctly.
  • Examples of answers to that question.

The students had so much fun getting creative with their projects. Once they were done, they were able to practice asking and answering these questions with their peers.

If your students are creating with MacBook, they can still snap a picture of themselves and use markup tools in Preview to add shapes and text to create a similar image.

📣 How could you inspire creativity and learning with pop-art in your classroom?
