Use labeling to develop writing skills and build vocabulary - Look and Label Log for Early Learners

Labeling pictures is a fantastic foundation for early learners' writing skills! It reinforces the understanding that pictures represent real-world objects and that words are used to name those objects. By labeling, children learn new words and expand their existing vocabulary. This rich word bank becomes essential for both speaking and writing. Labeling often involves simple words, allowing children to start recognizing and associating letters with sounds. Finally, labeling transitions smoothly into writing simple sentences as children start to understand how words can be combined to describe the picture.

In this simple Label Log created in Keynote, early learners use the drawing tool to label a picture on each page then create an audio recording to practice reading skills.

To differentiate and scaffold the learning teachers may ask students to locate the labeling words on vocabulary anchor charts around the room or use their letter - sound background knowledge to write with inventive spelling.

Students can write in different colors to identify the parts of speech and in a blended learning task students write complete sentences on paper using their labeled picture as support.
