Characterization of Mrs. Luella Washington Bates Jones

We read Langston Hughes’ short story, “Thank You, M’am” and focused on characterization and theme. I shared a digital presentation of a characterization of Roger, one of the main characters. Next, the students worked collaboratively with their table groups to characterize the other main character, Mrs. Luella Washington Bates Jones. I am attaching the template given to the students and one student example. Students were required to provide text evidence with an audio recording of them reading it and explaining what it meant about the character. #DPJHTECH

Thanks for sharing your example of characterization and theme using a Keynote template! Super for them to include a recording explaining their conclusion about the character. So easy with Keynote.

What a wonderful way to incorporate student understanding of characterization and theme. This technique can be used with any poem, short story or even a novella.

Students take agency with their own learning when they have to record themselves. Listening and sharing with friends and classmates is an added bonus when they are the "star" of their own "show."

Fantastic!
