Context
This activity strengthens vocabulary, creativity, and narrative writing skills. Students are given a list of 50 words, ranging from descriptive to quirky, and must choose ten to weave into a short, original story. It encourages decision-making, playful use of language, and imaginative thinking, while providing structure and a fun challenge for students to work within.
Preparation & Flow
1. Warm-Up Word Play
Begin with a short discussion or game:
“What makes a word fun or powerful in a story?”
Highlight vivid adjectives, verbs, and unique nouns.
2. Reveal the Word List
Share a curated list of 50 words (printed or on screen).
Include a mix of:
Emotions (e.g. thrilled, embarrassed)
Actions (e.g. stumble, sprint)
Objects/places (e.g. lantern, tower, alley)
Quirky words (e.g. banana, whisper, glitch)
3. Choose Your 10 Words
Students select ten words they find interesting or challenging.
4. Write the Story
Using Pages or Google Docs, students write a short narrative (150–250 words) using all ten words meaningfully.
5. Share & Celebrate
Pair up or form small groups for peer reading. Celebrate the most creative use of words!
Possible Extensions
Publish a Class Anthology: Compile all stories into a digital class booklet or shared folder.
Story Swap: Students trade word lists and write new stories using each other’s chosen ten.
