Learning with iPad - Oral Interviews with Pages and Voice Memo

Context

Oral history is a very rich resource in the discipline of History.  Hence, it is always an excellent activity for students to do especially when they have good candidates to interview.   To best capture the essence of any interview, a combination of the audio and transcript will give it greater depth since the mood and tone of the interview will also be duly captured.  To achieve this, students can use the Voice Memo app on any iOS devices to record the interview.  The app will also generate the transcript efficiently and accurately.  With that, it make it easy for students to present their findings in Pages, along with any other media to support.

Preparation and Flow

For this lesson, students will need to have Pages install in their devices.  Teacher may create a basic template using Pages for students to model where they can submit as their final assignment.  (See attached image)

1. Setting the context.   (5 mins)

Teacher will set the objectives of the assignment.  Guidelines should also be given as to who to interview and the duration of the interview.  Teacher may model a basic template in Pages as their final submission.

2. This may be done as a group activity as students craft interview questions with prior research done on the topic.

3.  Once they have crafted their interview questions and found suitable interviewee, they can prepare to conduct the interview using the Voice Memo App on any iOS devices.

NOTE:  Students should be advised to choose a quiet and conducive environment when conducting the interview.  Alternatively, use a mic to ensure good quality recording.

4.  At the end of the interview, students may easily extract the transcript of the interview using the ‘transcript’ function in the Voice Memo app.  Students may also regulate the playback speed function accordingly to better understand the interview if necessary.

The audio recording may be exported to Pages along with the transcript and organised in Pages as an assignment.
