Learning with iPad - Creating a Student Handbook

Context

In my engagements with schools over the years, I have seen a move towards a digitisation of the student handbook that many schools still print. Be it a move for more eco-friendly practices, the ease of accessing and updating information digitally, it does not seem a bad idea to make a digital handbook for either a subject or a school.

Preparation and Flow

Though not strictly a lesson to be carried out, I was also thinking how we could make the handbooks more personal, relatable, pertinent and interactive. It got me thinking that while some content such as school rules could be fixed, how we interact with them does not need to.

Using Pages we could create elements and links that connect to the web for information that can be updated more regularly e.g. school calendar. And yes heading back to school rules, we could make it a lesson where students are required to get a personal response of the application to the rule after they have discussed or watch a scenario that requires them to think about it.

Hence instead of handbook per se that is strictly informational, make it into a journal experience.

Possible Extension

In the same spirit, it is an opportunity while using digital tools to look at how we want students to interact in not just the knowledge, but the process of deriving, curating and producing the content. It would be also a bonus to have them produce content that can be acted on by others around them.
