A Student Learning Log to help foster agency for students
This year, we’re excited to roll out a new Learning Log in Numbers that will make Standards-Based Learning clearer, more meaningful, and more student-driven for everyone involved.
📘 Why a Learning Log?
Over the past few years, we’ve consistently heard the same concern from students and families:
“I don’t really know where I’m at with standards.”
In a Standards-Based Grading system, students can’t simply calculate an average, which often led to confusion. Parents wanted clarity, students wanted ownership, and teachers wanted a structure that supported both.
Our new Learning Log was created to bridge that gap.
📊 What the Learning Log Does
Using Numbers, students can now:
- Enter their scores for each standard throughout the learning process
- See their median and mode automatically calculated — two measures that provide a much more accurate picture of progress in a standards-based system
- Track trends over time so they can recognize growth
- Add samples of work they are proud of to share during family conferences
These tools help students build a clearer understanding of their learning journey, without relying on traditional averages that don’t reflect standards-based philosophy.
💬 Supporting Student-Led Conferences
One of our favorite additions is the Spotlight Showcase section. Students can upload or insert photos, screenshots, or reflections about work they’re proud of. This not only shifts the focus toward growth and mastery — it also encourages students to lead the conversation during family conferences.
Our hope is that this Learning Log becomes a natural pathway toward more student-led conferences, stronger reflection skills, and deeper academic conversations at home.
🤝 Designed for Clarity, Confidence, and Ownership
Students and parents have asked for a tool that helps them understand progress in a transparent, empowering way. This Learning Log was thoughtfully designed to provide exactly that. By focusing on median and mode, students get a more accurate view of their standing with each standard — and families gain insight into what the learning really looks like.
We’re excited to see how this helps learners take the wheel and share their growth with confidence.
If you have questions, ideas, or feedback as we roll this out, please jump into the discussion below — we’d love to hear your thoughts! HUGE Shout out to Megan, my colleague (who recently earned her Apple Learning Coach certification!) for dreaming up this idea and collaborating with me to bring it to life!

Super interested in this as our elementary schools just switched to evidence based grading! What grade level will you use this with? Wondering if 4th and 5th graders would benefit from this!
