AppSmash: iMovie and Magicschool AI Weather Reports

A grade 5 teacher in my school shared with me a project the entire grade 5 class completed when learning about weather. Their learning targets were:

  • I can understand the job of a meteorologist.
  • I can understand the different tools used to measure weather.
  • I can use research processes to reach conclusions and build understanding

Using iMovie to produce a weather report with a green screen is a popular project, but what I loved about this teacher's design, is that she incorporated the webapp, Magicschool AI. She created a Custom Chatbot in MagicStudent for her students to jump into to help them complete a research booklet she gave them. She attached the research booklet to the instructions for the chatbot and told it this:

First help students:

1. Choose interesting locations to research. help them find somewhere they have been before but they loved or somewhere in the world that could be exciting for them. Don't let them choose [insert hometown here].

2. Then help students research the weather in that city. Answer the questions they ask you, don't give them all the information at once.

3. Then help them add personalization like jokes, extreme weather stories or fun facts.

I loved the next part, the teacher shared with her students that this can get frustrating, as for most of them it would be their first time in iMovie. They talked through these points:

  • Be Patient With Yourself: You are not expected to know everything right away. Learning takes time. If something doesn’t work the first time, take a breath and try again.
  • Be a Problem Solver: If you get stuck, ask yourself: What am I trying to do? What have I already tried? What could I try next?
  • Look at buttons, test things out, and think like a creator. Trying is how we learn!
  • Take Risks: Don’t be afraid to click, explore, and experiment. You won’t “break” iMovie! Some of the best ideas come from trying something new, even if it doesn’t work at first.
  • Ask and Support Each Other: You are not alone. Your classmates are learning too! Help each other, share tips, and ask questions when you need support.

With slides to accompany their learning, students began their research and were on their way!

I have attached a pdf of the slides the teacher shared.

Thank you to Richelle Christie for sharing her lesson.

Great integration of these tools! I particularly enjoy the work to create a safe space to explore a new app. Thanks for sharing.
