Lesson Overview
Engage: Activating Prior Knowledge
Students begin the lesson by watching an introduction video created using Keynote. The video features animations, images, and vocabulary related to gadgets and technology to spark curiosity and activate prior knowledge.
Students:
- respond to guided questions;
- identify the gadgets shown in the video; and
- discuss how technology is used in their daily lives.
Explore: Building Vocabulary and Sentence Construction
The teacher introduces the Subject + Verb + Object sentence structure and models simple sentences such as: I use a tablet to watch videos.
Students use a teacher-created Pages journal to complete vocabulary activities and practise constructing simple and meaningful sentences. Sentence starters and visual cues are provided to support diverse learners.
Create: Producing a Podcast
Students are given several real-life scenarios related to technology and daily life. Using the planning pages in the Pages journal, they:
- organise their ideas;
- write a simple script; and
- incorporate at least five vocabulary words.
Students then use GarageBand to record and edit a one- to two-minute podcast. They may enhance their recordings with background music and replay them to improve pronunciation and speaking clarity.
Share and Collaborate
Students share their podcasts with their classmates. Peers provide feedback using a checklist focusing on:
- vocabulary usage;
- sentence structure;
- pronunciation; and
- speaking clarity.
This collaborative process encourages communication and helps students build confidence in spoken English.
Reflect
Students revisit their Pages journal and reflect on the following questions:
- Which vocabulary words did you use successfully?
- How did creating a podcast help you communicate your ideas?
- What would you improve in your next recording?
Through the purposeful use of Keynote, Pages, and GarageBand, students move beyond memorising vocabulary and become creative storytellers who communicate ideas in authentic and meaningful ways.
