From Prompt to Draft: Using Pages to Support SPM Story Writing

I recently created a Story Writing Planner in Pages for my SPM English students to support the drafting stage of story writing. I wanted a resource that would help students move from a writing prompt to a complete first draft in a more structured and engaging way, so I designed this Pages module to guide them through the process step by step.

In this planner, students can:

  • respond to a story prompt
  • brainstorm key ideas such as character, setting, conflict, climax, ending, and lesson learnt
  • use a language bank with feelings, actions, connectors, and sentence starters
  • draft their story directly in Pages
  • review their work using a self-check checklist

What I like about using Pages for this activity is that it gives students a space to plan and draft in one place, while also allowing them to personalise their ideas by adding visuals, emojis, or other media during the brainstorming stage. It makes the writing process feel more interactive and less intimidating, especially for students who need scaffolding before they begin writing.

I use this resource as a support tool before students produce their full story writing response, and it has helped them organise their ideas more clearly and write with greater confidence.

I’m sharing it here in case it might be useful for other language teachers who are using Apple tools to support writing in the classroom.
