Visiting The Great Wall of China with AR

Travelling allows students to explore places, cultures, and histories beyond their immediate surroundings. However, visiting world-famous landmarks is not always possible. To provide students with an immersive travel experience, this lesson uses augmented reality (AR) to bring the Great Wall of China into the classroom.

Using Reality Composer, students explore an interactive AR watchtower inspired by one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Around the watchtower, students discover traditional Chinese dragons that serve as interactive information points. Each accessory reveals a different paragraph of information about the Great Wall, while one dragon includes an audio narration created in GarageBand and embedded into the AR experience.

As students move around the AR environment, they collect information to complete a Travel Fact Sheet, engage with authentic reading and listening materials, and document their virtual journey. Students then create a digital travel journal in Pages by combining written reflections, screenshots from their AR exploration, and personal responses.

By transforming a reading lesson into an immersive virtual field trip, students experience travel, culture, and language learning in a meaningful and memorable way.
