Lights, Camera, Narration! Amplifying Student Voice with Photo Comics in Pages.

As part of a Form 2 English Language lesson aligned with the CEFR curriculum, students explored speaking skills through a creative and engaging digital storytelling activity using iPad and the Pages app. The lesson was designed around the theme People and Culture and the topic is “Good Luck, Bad Luck.” Students worked collaboratively to create an interactive Photo Comic with Voice Narration, combining photography, storytelling, and oral narrating into a single learning experience.

Subject: English Language (CEFR-Aligned)

Level: Form 2

Theme: People and Culture

Focus Area: Speaking Skills

Learning Objectives: Students will be able to…

  1. Speak confidently using appropriate vocabulary and expressions in a narration.
  2. Use suitable gestures, facial expressions, and body language.
  3. Record and present with clear pronunciation and intonation.

Activities

Activity 1: Planning the Story

  • Students work in groups of 3–4.
  • They create a simple storyline based on a daily-life situation related to the topic.
  • Students draft the storyline with Freeform.

Working in small groups, students planned a simple storyline using Freeform based on everyday situations related to good luck and bad luck. They then used the iPad camera to capture photographs while acting out their scenes. Students were encouraged to demonstrate appropriate body language, gestures, and facial expressions to enhance the visual storytelling aspect of their comics.

Activity 2: Photo Comic Production

  • Students use the iPad Camera to capture photos acting out their scenes.
  • Students apply appropriate gestures and facial expressions while taking photos.
  • Photos are inserted into Pages (template given with placeholder) and arranged as comic panels.

Students analyse their photos to identify effective speaking elements such as pronunciation, intonation, facial expressions, and gestures. This helped them understand how communication extends beyond spoken words and includes non-verbal cues. Using Pages, students arranged their photographs into comic-style panels.

Activity 3: Voice Recording

  • Students record their voice using the audio recording feature in Pages.
  • Audio clips are inserted into the relevant comic panels.
  • Students listen and edit or redo the audio recording. This allows students to rehearse and improve pronunciation, fluency, and expression.

To strengthen their speaking skills, they recorded voice narrations directly within Pages and embedded the audio recordings into the corresponding comic panels. This feature transformed their projects into interactive digital comics that allowed audiences to both view and listen to the story. Throughout the recording process, students practised pronunciation, fluency, intonation, and expression. They listened to their recordings, reflected on their performance, and re-recorded when necessary, promoting self-assessment and continuous improvement.

Activity 4: Presentation and Feedback

  • Groups present their photo comics.
  • Peers provide feedback on clarity of speech, pronunciation, and effectiveness of gestures.

The lesson concluded with group presentations, where students shared their completed photo comics that they exported to EPUB and received peer feedback. Discussions focused on clarity of speech, effectiveness of gestures, and overall communication skills.

This learning experience successfully integrated technology with language learning by providing students with an authentic audience and purpose for speaking. Beyond developing oral communication skills, students enhanced their creativity, collaboration, critical thinking, and digital literacy. The use of Pages transformed a traditional speaking activity into an engaging multimedia project that empowered students to express themselves confidently while creating meaningful content. Through this activity, students discovered that digital tools can be powerful platforms for communication, creativity, and storytelling, making language learning both relevant and enjoyable.
