Adventure Sports Explorer: Promoting Safe Sports Through Digital Storytelling
How can we inspire teenagers to explore adventure sports safely and responsibly?
In this lesson, students become Adventure Sports Explorers tasked with investigating exciting sports, evaluating safety considerations, and encouraging active lifestyles. Through digital storytelling, audio recording, multimedia design, and augmented reality experiences, students explore different sports while developing communication, creativity, and critical thinking skills.
Using Keynote, Pages, Freeform, and Reality Composer, students complete a series of missions and document their discoveries in an interactive Adventure Sports Explorer Journal.
This lesson is inspired by Unit 6: Ready, Steady, Go!, where students explore sports, adventure, and healthy lifestyles through authentic and creative learning experiences.

Essential Question
How can we encourage teenagers to try adventure sports safely?
Lesson Overview
Students receive a mission to become Certified Adventure Sports Explorers.
Using their Adventure Sports Explorer Journal, students complete a series of investigations, creative challenges, and multimedia tasks while exploring different adventure sports and promoting safe participation.
Mission 1: Sport Scout
Students investigate sports vocabulary and discover a variety of adventure sports.
Using Keynote, students create a sport-themed word cloud featuring twenty key sport-related terms. They then explore different adventure sports and create a visual gallery showcasing five sports they would like to try.
Students discuss their choices and explain why the selected sports appeal to them.
Mission 2: Become a Sport Influencer
Students imagine they have been selected as sports influencers to promote an exciting sport to teenagers around the world.
Using Pages, students select one sport, insert a representative image, and record a 30–45 second audio advertisement.
In their recording, students explain:
• what the sport involves
• why it is exciting
• skills or equipment needed
• why teenagers should try it
• safety advice for beginners
Students use persuasive language to encourage others to participate responsibly.
Mission 3: Safety First
Students investigate the risks and responsibilities associated with adventure sports.
Using Freeform, students create a Sport Survival Guide that includes:
• essential safety equipment
• dos and don'ts
• beginner tips
• emergency precautions
Students discuss how preparation and safety awareness contribute to positive sporting experiences.
Mission 4: Design an AR Adventure
Students become adventure experience designers.
Working in pairs, students use Reality Composer to create an interactive AR sport environment, piece of equipment, or sporting scene.
Examples include:
• Paddleboarding Lagoon
• Snorkelling Reef
• Skateboarding Park
• Surfing Beach
• Mountain Bike Trail
Students consider both creativity and safety while designing their AR experience.
Final Mission: Certified Adventure Sports Explorer
Students capture screenshots of their AR model and record a screen walkthrough explaining:
• features of the design
• equipment included
• safety considerations
• reasons visitors would enjoy the sport
Students conclude by reflecting on how adventure sports can be enjoyable, healthy, and safe when proper precautions are followed.

Teacher Reflection
Adventure sports are often introduced through textbook passages and vocabulary exercises. By transforming students into Adventure Sports Explorers, they become active participants in their learning. Through multimedia storytelling, audio communication, and augmented reality design, students use English in meaningful contexts while developing confidence, creativity, and problem-solving skills.
Extension Activity
Invite students to design an Adventure Sports Tourism Campaign promoting local destinations such as Langkawi, Sipadan, Desaru Coast, or Gopeng.
Students can create additional AR experiences, promotional videos, and digital travel guides to encourage responsible adventure tourism.
Final Thought
When students explore, create, and share, language learning becomes an adventure.
With iPad, students do not simply learn about sports.
They become Adventure Sports Explorers.
