Creating a Soundscape Composition with Apple Voice Memos and Keynote
This lesson integrates Apple Voice Memos and Apple Keynote to support authentic music creation, listening, and reflection. It aligns well with the KSSM Secondary School Music curriculum, particularly the strands of Music Production (Penghasilan Muzik) and Music Appreciation (Apresiasi Muzik), which encourage students to create original musical works and evaluate music creatively.

Materials Needed:
- iPad
- Apple Voice Memos
- Apple Keynote
- Earphones (optional)
- Student Activity Book (Provided)
Step/Lesson Flow Plan:
Step 1: Engage (10 minutes)
In this lesson, teacher plays several mystery recordings: Rain, Birds, School Bell, Footsteps, Basketball Bouncing etc. Then, teacher will ask students, "What sound is this?", students will then guess the sounds.
Teacher can lead the discussion using the following questions:
- Is every sound considered music?
- How do sounds create emotions?
Then, teacher introduces the challenge:
- "Today, you are going to become sound designers."
Step 2: Explain (15 minutes)
Teacher demonstrates how to Apple Voice Memos:
Open Voice Memos on iPad/Macbook, press the Record (Red Button) to record.
Once recording is done, kindly rename the recordings.
Try pressing Replay, you can always trim unnecessary sections:
Click Done, and the iPad will automatically save the recordings. You can see all your recordings in the All Recordings tab on the left of the app.
Then, teacher will explain that different sounds can represent Mood, Place, Story and Time.
Step 3: Explore (15 minutes)
Students work in groups of four and be asked to walk around the school (or classroom area) to collect sounds using Apple Voice Memos. Possible recordings:
- Opening classroom door
- Pencil writing
- Students clapping
- Wind
- Leaves
- Water bottle
- School bell
- Footsteps
- Chair moving
Students save each recording in Apple Voice Memos with a suitable name.
Once done, Teacher will demonstrates Keynote to allow students to learn to insert pictures, add titles, insert Voice Memo recordings, and add captions.
Students will then convert their findings to mov. file.
Step 4: Elaborate (30 minutes)
Teacher will then give a task to each group of four to create a musical soundscape called "A Day at My School". Students arrange recordings into a story.
Example: School bell→Students Walking→Teacher Speaking→Writing→Recess→Rain→School Ends
Each sound is inserted into Keynote.
- Each slide explains
- What is the sound?
- Why is it important?
- What feeling does it create?
5. Evaluate (10 minutes)
Groups present. Audience closes their eyes while listening. After listening, classmates answer:
"What story did you hear?"
Why This Lesson Works
This lesson highlights the strengths of Apple’s native apps:
- Voice Memos enables students to capture authentic sounds quickly with high-quality recordings, encouraging active listening and sound exploration.
- Keynote allows students to transform those recordings into an engaging multimedia presentation by combining audio, images, text, and narration.
The activity reflects the Apple Education philosophy of Create, Explore, and Share, while supporting the KSSM emphasis on creativity, music production, appreciation, collaboration, and communication. It also provides an accessible project-based learning experience without requiring specialized music software, making it suitable for any secondary school classroom.
What sounds will your students discover when they start listening to the world around them? Give this activity a try and share how your learners transform everyday sounds into creative musical stories.
