Music is a powerful learning tool that helps young learners remember concepts through rhythm and repetition. In this lesson, I use GarageBand to create an original educational song about animal feeding habits, adapted to the familiar melody of Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star. By using a tune that students already know, they can quickly learn and remember key science concepts in a fun and engaging way.
Although this classroom activity is conducted in Bahasa Melayu, I am sharing this resource in English so educators around the world can understand the idea and adapt it to their own languages and curriculum. The familiar melody can easily be paired with new lyrics to support different learning topics across subjects.
Rather than relying solely on textbooks, students learn by listening, singing and discussing the lyrics. This cross-curricular activity integrates Science, Music and Digital Creativity, demonstrating how GarageBand can be used to create meaningful learning experiences in the primary classroom.
GarageBand is an excellent creative tool for teachers who want to design original learning resources without requiring advanced music production skills. This simple arrangement creates an enjoyable musical experience while keeping the melody familiar and easy for young learners to follow.
For this activity, I created a simple arrangement using:
- Grand Piano
- Acoustic Guitar
- Strings
- Bass
- Drums
Layering these software instruments creates an enjoyable musical experience while keeping the melody simple enough for young learners to sing confidently.
Classroom Activity
Step 1 – Listen
Students listen to the educational song created in GarageBand.
While listening, they observe the rhythm and identify the names of the animals mentioned in the lyrics.
Step 2 – Sing Together
Students sing the song together in Bahasa Melayu while following the lyrics.
The familiar melody helps students remember the different feeding habits of animals through repetition and music.
Lyrics
Verse 1
Haiwan, haiwan, makan apa?
Gajah makan daun yang hijau,
Singa makan daging buruan,
Lembu makan rumput di padang,
Haiwan, haiwan, makan apa?
Kita lihat, sangat seronok!
Verse 2
Herbivor makan tumbuhan,
Karnivor makan daging segar,
Omnivor makan dua-dua,Bergantung pada habitatnya,
Haiwan, haiwan, makan apa?
Tabiat mereka sungguh menarik!
Step 3 – Discuss
Guide students with questions such as:
- Which animals eat plants?
- Which animals eat meat?
- Which animals eat both plants and meat?
- Can you name another herbivore?
- Can you name another carnivore?
- Can you name another omnivore?
Encourage students to explain their answers using their own words.
Step 4 – Create
Working in pairs or small groups, students replace the animals in the song with different examples.They then perform or record their own version using GarageBand.This simple extension activity encourages creativity while reinforcing the science concepts.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this activity, students are able to:
- identify herbivores, carnivores and omnivores;
- explain the feeding habits of different animals;
- communicate scientific ideas through music;
- collaborate with their peers;
- use GarageBand creatively to support learning.
Reflection
Music has always been an effective way to support memory and student engagement. By combining Science with GarageBand, students become active participants who listen, sing, discuss and create together.
Although this lesson is presented in Bahasa Melayu, the same GarageBand project can easily be adapted into different languages or subjects simply by changing the lyrics while keeping the same melody and arrangement.
I hope this resource inspires educators to explore creative ways of integrating music into classroom learning using GarageBand.
