This podcast explores the challenges faced by rural K–12 learners who have limited or no reliable internet access at home. While many of these students have access to technology during the school day, unreliable internet outside of school creates barriers to completing assignments, accessing instructional materials, and demonstrating learning.
Using the Universal Design for Learning (UDL) 3.0 framework, the podcast explains three key learning barriers: limited engagement due to the homework gap, limited representation when learning materials are only available online, and limited opportunities for action and expression when assignments require internet-based submissions.
To address these barriers, the podcast recommends two UDL-aligned technology solutions: providing offline-accessible digital resources and offering flexible ways for students to demonstrate their learning, such as downloadable materials, printed resources, audio recordings, and offline assignments. The episode concludes with a call to action encouraging educators and school leaders to design more equitable learning experiences by using UDL principles to remove barriers and ensure all students have meaningful opportunities to succeed.
