Meet Sizzle the Snake: Bringing Phonics to Life

Bringing the /s/ Sound to Life with Sizzle the Snake

How can we make phonics learning more engaging and meaningful for young ESL learners?

Meet Sizzle the Snake, a friendly animated character created to introduce the /s/ sound to Year 1 pupils through storytelling, visuals, sounds and a rhythmic jazz chant.

This learning resource combines creativity and purposeful technology integration to support early phonemic awareness.

1. Lesson Overview

  • School Level: Malaysian Primary School
  • Subject: English Language
  • Year: Year 1
  • Theme: World of Self, Family and Friends
  • Topic: Phonics – Consonant /s/
  • Duration: Approximately 30 minutes

  • Apps: Freeform, Keynote, GarageBand and iMovie

Curriculum Alignment

Main Skill – Listening

  • Content Standard 1.1: Recognise and reproduce target language sounds.
  • Learning Standard 1.1.1: Recognise and reproduce with support a limited range of high-frequency target language phonemes.

Complementary Skill – Reading

  • Content Standard 3.1: Recognise words in linear and non-linear texts by using knowledge of sounds of letters.
  • Learning Standard 3.1.1: Identify and recognise the shapes of the letters in the alphabet.

2. Learning Objectives

By the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to:

  1. Recognise and reproduce the /s/ sound.
  2. Identify familiar words beginning with /s/.
  3. Associate the sound with the letter S/s.
  4. Participate in a rhythmic phonics chant.

3. About the Learning Activity

Sizzle introduces the /s/ sound through a playful animated learning experience.

The video includes illustrated characters, familiar vocabulary, spoken sounds and a jazz chant to help pupils listen, imitate and practise the target phoneme.

Target vocabulary includes snake, sun, sock, and stop.

4. Learning Activity

Explore – Meet Sizzle! (10 minutes)

Pupils watch the animated introduction, listen to Sizzle's hissing sound and practise producing /s/. The teacher models pronunciation and introduces the letter S/s.

Create – Sound Detectives (15 minutes)

Pupils identify /s/ words from the video, repeat the vocabulary and participate in Sizzle's jazz chant using rhythm and movement.

Pupils requiring support can point to pictures and imitate sounds, while more confident learners can suggest additional words beginning with /s/.

Share & Reflect – Sss! We Did It! (5 minutes)

Pupils demonstrate their learning by producing the target sound, naming familiar /s/ words and repeating the chant.

5. Learning Materials

The multimedia resource includes:

  • Animated illustrations and the Sizzle character.
  • Letter S/s and vocabulary visuals.
  • Recorded phonics sounds.
  • A rhythmic jazz chant.
  • A completed phonics learning video.

The material was planned in Freeform, designed and animated in Keynote, recorded in GarageBand and assembled in iMovie.

Visual on how it was planned.
planned according to the phonics SOW (consonant s sound)

6. Learning Outcomes & Assessment

The activity is designed to support sound recognition, pronunciation, early sound-letter correspondence and active participation.

Teachers can assess learning through observation, oral repetition, picture identification and responses during the chant.

7. Reflection & Adaptation

Creating Sizzle reminded me that technology integration should begin with a meaningful learning objective.

By combining animation, rhythm and familiar vocabulary, I wanted to make phonics more enjoyable and accessible to young learners- hence creation on jazz chant to enhance the 's' sound.

Teachers can pause or replay the video, provide additional pronunciation support and adapt the approach for other phonemes such as /a/, /t/ and /p/.

The material can also be extended to blending and segmenting simple CVC words.

Your Turn!

How would you bring a phonics sound to life in your classroom?

I'd love to hear how fellow educators might adapt Sizzle's learning adventure for their pupils!
