Making Cursive Writing Fun with Apple Keynote
Cursive writing can be challenging for young learners, especially when learning how to form and connect letters correctly.
To make handwriting practice more engaging, I created a digital cursive writing resource using Apple Keynote on iPad.
The resource features a fun tongue twister, “Six slim snails slide slowly,” with colourful snail illustrations, four-line handwriting guides and animated cursive handwriting.
How I Created This Resource
Step 1: Designing the Slide
I opened Keynote and created a landscape slide with a soft blue background. I added snail illustrations and four-line handwriting guides to create an attractive learning environment.
Step 2: Selecting the Tongue Twister
I chose the sentence “Six slim snails slide slowly” because the repetition of the /s/ sound makes it enjoyable for pupils while providing opportunities to practise cursive letter connections.
Step 3: Creating the Handwriting
Using the drawing tools in Keynote and Apple Pencil, I wrote the sentence in cursive, carefully positioning the letters between the handwriting guidelines.
Step 4: Animating the Writing
I selected the handwritten drawing, tapped Animate, added a Build In effect and chose Line Draw. I adjusted the animation duration to allow pupils to observe the handwriting process clearly.
Step 5: Demonstrating the Writing
I arranged the animation to show the cursive writing progressively. This allows pupils to observe letter formation, joining strokes, spacing and alignment.
Step 6: Sharing the Resource
I exported the Keynote presentation as a video so pupils could watch, pause and replay the handwriting demonstration at their own pace.
Classroom Application
This resource can be used for teacher-led demonstrations, individual handwriting practice and independent learning.
Pupils watch the animation, trace the letters and practise writing the tongue twister independently.
Reflection
This activity demonstrates how Apple Keynote can transform a traditional handwriting exercise into an engaging visual learning experience.
The Line Draw animation makes handwriting more accessible by allowing pupils to observe the writing process rather than simply copying completed words.
I hope this simple idea inspires other educators to explore creative ways of using Keynote in their classrooms.
How do you use Keynote to make handwriting practice more engaging for your pupils?
