A Piece of Cake! Exploring Idioms with Keynote on iPad

Tell us what’s on your mind:

What happens when pupils take an idiom literally? It becomes a fun opportunity to explore language!

I created this English resource in Keynote on iPad to help primary pupils discover the difference between literal and figurative meanings. Starting with “a piece of cake”, pupils examine visual clues, guess the expression and explore its meaning before using it in a sentence.

The suggested learning sequence is:

• Look at the picture clues.

• Guess the idiom.

• Explain its figurative meaning.

• Read an example in context.

• Create a new sentence or illustrated scene.

I explored Image Playground to create visual prompts for the resource. Combining these images with Keynote offers opportunities for prediction, discussion and creative expression.

My aim is to make unfamiliar expressions more accessible, especially for pupils who benefit from visual support. As an extension, pupils could design their own idiom puzzles in Keynote and challenge their classmates to solve them.

How would you introduce idioms through visual storytelling? I would love to hear your ideas!

Brief resource description:

A visual English resource created in Keynote on iPad, using picture clues and sentence activities to help primary pupils explore idioms and their figurative meanings.
