Every sentence has clues. Can our young detectives find them?
I designed Sentence Detectives as a Keynote resource for primary English learners who need support with sentence building. The idea is to give pupils a clear purpose: investigate how words work together to communicate meaning.
The resource can be used to guide pupils through a series of language investigations:
• Identify who or what the sentence is about.
• Find the action.
• Look for details that explain where or when.
• Arrange words into a meaningful sentence.
• Check capital letters, punctuation and meaning.
For example, pupils could investigate “The boy plays football in the park” by identifying the person, action and place. They could then change one detail and explain how it changes the message.
My aim is to build pupils’ confidence in discussing and constructing sentences. The detective theme provides a playful context for making choices and explaining their reasoning.
As a next step, I would like pupils to create their own sentence mysteries in Keynote for a partner to solve.
What clues or challenges would you add to a sentence detective activity?
