Say It, Write It: An Arabic Student Workbook in Pages

 1. Description: This Pages workbook follows on from my interactive Keynote lesson on the same topic. Pupils listen to my pronunciation, record their own voice saying each word, and then write it. Every pupil practises speaking individually, and the teacher can listen back to each recording.

2. Subject: Arabic Language

3. Level: Year 5 (Primary)

4. Theme: Food

5. Topic: Topic 3: Hayya Na’kulu al-Khadrawat (هَيَّا نَأْكُلُ الْخَضْرَوَاتِ), “Let’s Eat Vegetables”

6. Focus Area: Listening, speaking and writing skills

7. Cross-Curricular Elements:

  • Language
  • Information and Communication Technology
  • Creativity and Innovation
  • Values (healthy eating)

8. Learning Objectives: By the end of the lesson, pupils will be able to:

  • pronounce 6 vegetable names correctly in their own recordings;
  • write the 6 vegetable names correctly;
  • write and read aloud one sentence: أَنَا آكُلُ ...

9. Learning Flow:

  • Induction (5 min): Quick review of the 6 words using the Keynote lesson.
  • Step 1 (15 min): Listen and record. Pupils play the teacher’s audio and record themselves saying each word in Pages.
  • Step 2 (15 min): Write. Pupils write each vegetable name under its picture.
  • Step 3 (5 min): Complete and record. Pupils write and record one sentence.
  • Closing (5 min): Pupils submit their workbooks. The teacher plays a few recordings and praises good pronunciation.

10. Closing: Keynote teaches it, and Pages lets every pupil say it and write it. Recording audio in Pages gives each pupil a chance to speak, even in a big class. How do you assess speaking in your language lessons? Share in the comments!
