About the Learning Activity
Describing a Lion is an interactive digital writing activity designed to strengthen Year 2 pupils’ English writing skills.
Using a lion AR as a visual stimulus, pupils explore animal vocabulary and descriptive adjectives before constructing simple sentences about the animal.
With Apple Keynote on the iPad, pupils complete a guided writing worksheet by describing the lion’s physical appearance and characteristics. They are encouraged to organise their ideas, construct meaningful sentences and produce a short descriptive paragraph.
The activity promotes creativity, vocabulary development, sentence construction and digital literacy while allowing pupils to practise writing in an engaging technology-integrated learning environment.

- Differentiate learning: Provide sentence starters and word banks for pupils who need support. Encourage advanced pupils to write longer paragraphs with additional details.
Classroom Application
This lesson can be implemented in a Year 2 English classroom through an individual or collaborative iPad writing activity.
Each pupil accesses the prepared Apple Keynote worksheet. The teacher facilitates the lesson by introducing descriptive vocabulary, modelling sentence construction and guiding pupils through the writing process.
Pupils use the Apple Pencil to write their descriptive paragraphs. They can also personalise their documents by adding relevant animal pictures.
Differentiated Classroom Application:
- Beginner: Complete sentence starters and use a vocabulary bank to write four simple sentences.
- Intermediate: Independently construct four to five descriptive sentences and organise them into a paragraph.
- Advanced: Write a longer descriptive paragraph using a wider range of adjectives, conjunctions and additional information about lions.
Conclusion
The integration of Apple Keynote into this Year 2 English writing lesson provides pupils with an engaging opportunity to develop their descriptive writing skills through technology.
By combining visual learning, vocabulary exploration, sentence construction and digital writing, pupils become more confident and independent writers.
