Using iPad for assessment

At Coxsackie Elementary (in the Coxsackie Athens Central School District), I am a second grade teacher. I used to think that it could be too time consuming to use the iPad for assessment, now I realize how fast and easy it can be. Students used their iPads to share their understanding of a hands on lesson about pollination. They used 3 key vocabulary words that were given to them, took a picture of their model, and used the 3 vocab words in a short description of the pollination process. I was able to view/listen to their recordings to quickly and easily assess their understanding.

Thanks for sharing your experience! Totally agree that being able to listen to students share their thinking is a powerful element of using iPad for assessment. It opens new doors for understanding where students are with their learning.

We have been focusing on high yield instructional strategies in our district and specifically ways to increase student ownership of their own learning. This is a great way to showcase this strategy. Thank you.
