Hello everyone. This is my first time posting in here. I wanted to share my story as a VP at McManus Middle School in Linden, NJ. Two years ago, a group of staff members attended an Apple Workshop on the challenge series and it inspired us to try it as a school community during our weekly Social Emotional Learning blocks.We decided to use the "Make a Difference in Your Community" challenge and asked staff and students to collaborate on creating a sustainable initiative to enhance our community.
After classes submitted responses, the school community voted on one project we would all get behind. The winning submission came from a sixth grade resource classroom. They came up with the "Linden Care Box". This became a large donation box that would be placed outside the school for community members to donate items to those in need. The class took then lead with teachers and others who volunteered to create and stock the box. It was a huge success. Since its inception, the box has different themes throughout the year about which items can be donated.
This project and the Linden Care Box really brought our school community together. It was a great learning experience for all of our students.
